The Christmas Number One

Yep, its that time, December is nearly upon us and the Christmas Number One conversation has already started in earnest. We thought this post should dedicate itself to that very festive question; who could it be this year?

Some music first though...you may well of heard the beautiful version of the Beatles song Golden Slumbers by Elbow being used on the John Lewis Christmas advert this year...if you haven't heard this version before by Phil Collins - have a listen, its a stunner :)

Let's take a look back first to some of the number ones from Christmas past...

The observant amongst you will notice a number of Christmas hit favourites that have never claimed the coveted number one for Christmas. In a lot of cases there has been a non-Christmas tune in the charts that's just been too strong to get unseated. Or in the case of 1984, one Christmas song was just too worthy in its cause to lose that number one spot. The original Band Aid 'Do they know its Christmas?' stayed in the charts for 5 weeks and by the end of December had sold over 3 million copies. And why is that significant? Well, the answer lays with the song resigned to number 2 that year...Last Christmas by Wham.

Although Last Christmas has re-entered the charts 14 times since 1984, its never got higher than the number 2 spot - most recently hitting number 7 in 2016. With the sudden and deeply sad loss of Whams leading man, George Michael, on Christmas Day 2016 there are many people that would love to see the song take that number one spot this year. You can join that cause by showing your support on the Social Media links below and spreading the word...

Other contenders with their 'hat in the ring' for the 2017 Christmas number one include Elbow, Adele, Stormzy, Ed Sheeren, David Bowie and Ariana Grande. Well, who could it be? Much like Strictly Come Dancing and the Apprentice...you never can tell what's going to happen...we'd like to see a bit of Christmas get into the Christmas number one spot...but we'd also like Leicester to get a bit of snow on Christmas Day...and we're unlikely to get that! :)

We'll play this Blog post out with a version of one our all time December chart favourites...
